Sky Sports'Jamie Carragher says former England teammate John Terry has been easily the best defender in the league this season.

Jamie Carragher believes John Terry is the best defender in the Premier League ‘by a mile’ after he skippered Chelsea to the title.

Terry equalled Roy Keane’s record of captaining a side to four Premier League titles after a 1-0 win over Crystal Palace in the early Super Sunday clash sealed Chelsea’s first league crown in five years.

And having played every minute of every game, the 34-year-old has been praised for his solidity as he steered the Blues to the top of the table.

Sky Sports pundit Carragher believes that Terry, named in the PFA Team of the Year has the perfect set-up at Chelsea to succeed, and the Blues skipper is way ahead of his counterparts.

“He’s never had that pace – I wouldn’t say he’s better now, but his understanding of the game and reading of the game has come on,” Carragher said.

“Also Mourinho, for John Terry,  is the perfect manager. The way he sets his teams up – he has Azpilicueta there, who’s not the most adventurous of full-backs, he has Matic in front of him.

“He needs that sort of protection because of his lack of mobility, but he makes up for it in other areas. He’s been the best defender by a mile in this league.

Fellow pundit Thierry Henry shared Carragher’s view of the Blues stalwart, and was full of praise of Terry’s efforts.

“Two years ago people thought he was done, and long gone,” Terry said.

“For him to be here again, being a champion – he didn’t just participate, he played every single minute.

“That’s just crazy. He was again in the team of the year, the best defender for me this season.”
