Jamie Carragher expects a big-name Chelsea defender to leave the club this summer after Kurt Zouma was signed and loaned back to Saint-Etienne for the remainder of the season.
Chelsea confirmed the capture of the 19-year-old on Deadline Day and Sky Sports pundit Carragher believes the transfer could signal the end for one of Jose Mourinho's experienced stoppers.
Former Liverpool defender Carragher suspects Zouma has been sent back to Ligue 1 to gain further experience before returning to challenge for a first-team spot next season.
"Chelsea wanted the player [Zouma] but they don't really need him now because they've got Gary Cahill, John Terry, David Luiz and Branislav Ivanovic," said Carragher.
"But who knows what will happen in the summer, if one of those players leaves the club that is when Zouma comes in when he's had more game time.
"There's no point of him coming in now and playing in the reserves. Chelsea may as well continue his education and experience playing games and then start him fresh in pre-season when there's not so much pressure about with competitive games.
"I would expect a player from Chelsea to leave in the summer from that position to allow him to come in and fill that space."
Currently club captain Terry is winning accolades for his performances in the Stamford Bridge outfit's defence.
However, Jamie Redknapp reckons Mourinho may have been on the lookout for a long-term replacement for the 33-year-old - and Zouma, who was touted as a potential France captain by Didier Deschamps, could fit the bill.
Redknapp said: "John Terry is in great form this year but he's obviously not going to be around forever.
"Zouma will get a lot of experience when he's loaned back and he's a very good signing. He's very quick, a good athlete and he'll be one that will certainly bolster them.
"Although I don't expect him to be in the Chelsea team any time soon."
