Martin's Starting Stats

On Sunday I witnessed Arsenal's first double over Tottenham when the second game was at White Hart Lane since the 1979/80 season. That season they won 1-0 at home (as it was this time) and 2-1 away. Sunday was also their first league win at White Hart Lane since September 2007, having failed to win in their five previous visits. This was their third consecutive win in North London derbies including January's FA Cup victory; Arsenal had not managed three wins in a row since the period from March 1987 - Jan 1989. Spurs are still waiting for their 50th derby win. The overall record in the 154 meetings is 64 wins for Arsenal, 41 draws and 49 Tottenham wins - although it should be remembered that the first eight of those games were not North London derbies as Arsenal were in south London at the time. Arsenal have finished higher than Tottenham in each of the last 18 seasons and took a big step to making it 19 with this win. Tomas Rosicky scored his third goal against Spurs and his second this season after scoring in the FA Cup win in January. He also scored in a 5-2 home win in February 2012. This was his 25th Arsenal goal and there have been none better - and I'm sure there won't be many better in the future. A couple of minor stats for you: the game marked Danny Rose's 50th appearance for Tottenham and Kyle Naughton's 150th career league appearance. Finally, this was Arsene Wenger's 999th game in charge of Arsenal and his 579th win (including penalty shoot-outs). He will take charge of his 1,000th game against Chelsea on Saturday. In contrast, this was Tim Sherwood's 19th game in charge and his eighth defeat.

Capital perfection

Dear Martin. I was wondering if the mighty Arsenal are on course for a special record this year. So far we have won away at West Ham, Fulham, Crystal Palace and now Tottenham and are on course for a perfect record against the other London teams if we can win at Chelsea on Saturday. Has this ever been done before either by a team in London or outside London? Ian Sparry (Arsenal fan) MARTIN SAYS: You're right to say that Arsenal have a 100 per cent record in their London away games this year with one game left to play. Their results so far are as follows: 16/03/2014: Tottenham 0-1 Arsenal
26/12/2013: West Ham 1-3 Arsenal
26/10/2013: Crystal Palace 0-2 Arsenal
24/08/2013: Fulham 1-3 Arsenal I can confirm that if they win at Stamford Bridge on Saturday then they will become the first team in Premier League history to win all of their away games in London in the same season. No side has previously finished a season with a 100 per cent win record from their games against the London sides (although it's obviously harder for other teams who have to play away at the Emirates Stadium - something Arsenal obviously don't have to do). If Arsenal fail to beat Chelsea, they will still end up with a win percentage of 80 per cent from their London away games, which would be the second-highest percentage in Premier League history. The best record to date was recorded by Manchester United in 2001/02 who won five of their six games away from home against London sides. Their results that season were as follows: 29/09/2001: Tottenham 3-5 Man Utd
17/11/2001: Arsenal 3-1 Man Utd
30/12/2001: Fulham 2-3 Man Utd
10/02/2002: Charlton 0-2 Man Utd
16/03/2002: West Ham 3-5 Man Utd
20/04/2002: Chelsea 0-3 Man Utd As you can see, Manchester United won five of their six games in London in 2001/02, but lost at Highbury and ended up losing the title to Arsenal that season. Manchester City, who have won three of their four games in London so far this season (losing at Chelsea) could match that record if they win forthcoming away games at Arsenal and Crystal Palace. Penal-three

Hi Martin, after the Liverpool v Man United game, has any home team ever conceded three penalties in one game before? Thanks, Ryan Cleveland MARTIN SAYS: Thanks to the clever chaps at Opta I can tell you that Manchester United have become only the third side in Premier League history to concede three penalties in one game. They have also become the second HOME team to concede three penalties in a game. I can also confirm that in all three of those matches, at least one of the penalties was not converted. On Super Sunday, Steven Gerrard scored his first two penalties and missed the third. Here's what happened on the other two occasions when three penalties were awarded in one Premier League game: 03/04/2010: Sunderland 3-1 Tottenham Tottenham conceded three penalties away at Sunderland in April 2010, but on that occasion Black Cats striker Darren Bent only converted one of them. The striker, who had left White Hart Lane the previous summer, scored from open play after 34 seconds and then scored from the spot in the 29th minute - but then saw two further penalties saved by Heurelho Gomes; one shortly before half-time and the other in the second-half. Remarkably, that was the third penalty Bent had failed to convert against Spurs that season, having also missed one in the game at White Hart Lane earlier in the campaign. 21/04/2000: Bradford 4-4 Derby The first time this happened was the extraordinary match between Bradford and Derby in April 2000, when home side Bradford conceded three penalties, all of them taken by Craig Burley. The midfielder scored from the spot in the 36th minute and 52nd minute, but when Derby were awarded their third penalty of the game in the 80th minute, his effort was saved by goalkeeper Matt Clarke. There were actually four penalties awarded in the game in total as Peter Beagrie converted one for Bradford in the first half. I also noticed that Gerrard has scored seven penalties in 2014 (away at Stoke, home to Villa, away to Fulham, away to Arsenal, away to Southampton and two out of three away to Man United) and his late failure was his first miss. Let's hope he's getting lots of practice in for the summer in Brazil - although strangely he has never taken a penalty for England in normal play, only in penalty-shoot-outs.

Not paying the penalty

I was amazed to find out that Manchester United had not conceded a penalty since December 2011 before their game with Liverpool. I was wondering if any team had ever gone longer than that without conceding a penalty and which team currently has played the most matches without a penalty against them. Carlo (Liverpool fan) MARTIN SAYS: Before Sunday, Manchester United had gone 85 Premier League games without conceding a spot-kick. The last one they conceded was at Old Trafford on New Year's Eve 2011 when Dimitar Berbatov fouled Chris Samba of Blackburn and Yakubu scored from the spot in a shock 3-2 win. That run of 85 games is the longest run without conceding a spot kick in the history of the Premier League. The previous record was held by Bolton Wanderers, who went 64 games between 1996 and 2001 without giving away a Premier League penalty (although they spent many of those years in the second tier). Thanks to Opta, here are the eight teams to have gone through 50 Premier League games without conceding a penalty: 08/03/14: Manchester United (85 games)
20/10/01: Bolton Wanderers (64 games)
24/04/99: Tottenham Hotspur (64 games)
26/12/00: Arsenal (59 games)
01/02/12: Fulham (59 games)
03/03/07: Manchester City (55 games)
13/01/01: Leeds United (52 games)
22/04/09: Chelsea (50 games) Now that Manchester United's run has ended, the team that has gone longer than any other without conceding a Premier League penalty is Chelsea. The last one they conceded came in a 4-0 win over Stoke at the Britannia Stadium in January 2013 - when Jonathan Walters hit the bar with the kick, having earlier scored two own goals. It's also worth noting that Cardiff have played 29 Premier League games and are still yet to concede a penalty. Current Premier League teams and games since they last conceded a penalty:

Seeing red

Dear Martin. As a Liverpool fan there was much to enjoy at Old Trafford on Sunday, but one of those things was seeing Nemanja Vidic get sent off against us yet again. I wanted to email to ask you if any other player has been sent off against the same team more often than he has? Stuart (Liverpool fan) MARTIN SAYS: This was the fourth time that Nemanja Vidic has been sent off against Liverpool in the Premier League. The occasions were as follows: 16/03/2014: 3-0 defeat at Old Trafford
25/10/2009: 2-0 defeat at Anfield
14/03/2009: 4-1 defeat at Old Trafford
13/09/2008: 2-1 defeat at Anfield With the help of Opta I can tell you that Vidic is the only player in the history of the Premier League to be sent off against the same opponents THREE times, never mind FOUR times. Vidic has now been red carded on six occasions with four coming against Liverpool and the other two both against Chelsea (and his nemesis Fernando Torres was on the pitch on both of those occasions). There are 34 instances of a player being sent off against the same opponent more than once and he accounts for two of those instances. Ramires of Chelsea joined the list this weekend after receiving his second Premier League red card against Aston Villa. Thanks to Opta, here are the 33 instances of a player being sent off twice against the same opposition in the Premier League Carlton Palmer v Leeds United

Old Trafford foes

Dear Martin. Great work with the column every week. Keep up the good work. Steven Gerrard has scored plenty of goals at Old Trafford over the years. Can you tell me if any non-Manchester United player has scored more Premier League goals than he has at Old Trafford? Abdullah (Liverpool fan) MARTIN SAYS: Steven Gerrard scored his fourth and fifth Premier League goals on Sunday (and almost added a sixth from the penalty spot, missing out on the chance to become the first opposition player to score a hat-trick at Old Trafford in the Premier League). Those goals have indeed seen him go clear as the highest-scoring opposition player in the Premier League at the Theatre of Dreams. He has taken the record from Darren Bent, who scored his fourth goal at Old Trafford for Fulham earlier this season. His feat is particularly impressive, however, as he's scored those goals for four different clubs. As well as scoring in the 2-2 draw for Fulham in February, he scored in Tottenham's 5-2 loss in April 2009, in Sunderland's 2-2 draw in October 2009 and in Aston Villa's 3-1 defeat in February 2011. Only 13 other players have scored three goals at Old Trafford in the Premier League without playing for Manchester United - including Danny Muphy who scored three winning goals for Liverpool in three 1-0 wins at old Trafford in the space of four seasons. Those players are: Eidur Gudjohnsen
Duncan Ferguson
Emmanuel Adebayor
Juninho
Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink
Danny Murphy
Fernando Torres
Gabriel Agbonlahor
Mark Viduka
John Hartson
Kevin Phillips
Craig Bellamy
Matt Le Tissier
