Steven Lawless has been given a new deal by Partick Thistle, a few days after being handed a ban for breaching betting rules.

The 24-year-old midfielder was slapped with a two-match suspension – with four more suspended until the end of next season – after admitting he had gambled on 513 matches between December 2012 and March 2015.

However, Thistle have given him another 12-month contract and a club spokesman said: "We are delighted to be able to confirm that Stevie Lawless, who played such a big part in our success this season, has pledged his immediate future to the club, signing a new one-year deal."

Lawless moved to Firhill in 2012 and helped them win the First Division title a year later.

He has netted 22 goals in 114 appearances and, having already served one game of his ban, will also miss their opening fixture next season.
