World Cup star Fara Williams’s early goal helped Liverpool defeat Arsenal 3-1 as they recorded an impressive FA WSL1 victory in front of a 2,000-strong crowd.

Three of England’s Lionesses started the clash and it was midfielder Williams who capitalised on her side’s brighter start with a powerful left-footed strike into the top corner after nine minutes.

Seven minutes later Arsenal couldn’t handle Liverpool at the game’s first corner, allowing full-back Becky Easton to apply the final touch.

It took 23 minutes for Arsenal to get into the game. Vicky Losada put Danielle Carter through, but she was unable to score her second league goal of the season, slotting wide.

Carter continued to persevere, but Libby Stout and the Liverpool defence held firm until half-time despite a close-range effort from Carla Humphrey.

The hosts reacted better after the restart – Carter tried to release Chioma Ubogagu, Natalia Pablos Sanchon made her presence felt from 25 yards, and the pressure eventually paid off with the Spaniard guiding a clever, lofted through ball in from Rose after 63 minutes.

Arsenal continued to knock on the door through Carter, Alex Scott and Casey Stoney, but a long clearance caught them napping and allowed Asisat Oshoala to get ahead of the defence and seal the game for the champions.
