Dundee boss Paul Hartley praised Paul McGowan as his first goal of the season moved them into the top six after a 1-0 win over Partick Thistle.

Hartley's side leapfrogged Tayside rivals St Johnstone in the table thanks to McGowan's stoppage-time finish.

The Dark Blues boss was thrilled for McGowan, as he said: "We were expecting a little bit more in terms of goals from him but in terms of his overall play he's been fantastic.

"He drives us on at times. I think that goal was a reward for his efforts.

"We've been encouraging him to try and get into the box a little bit more and then he does it with the last kick of the ball which is great.

"He's such a good boy in terms of how he plays and his love for the game. I'm just really pleased for him."

Meanwhile, Thistle manager Alan Archibald admitted he was frustrated to lose the game in the dying seconds.

Archibald said: "It was a sickener at the end for us. We played a lot of good stuff. This was much better after two or three disappointing performances.

"We were good, especially in the first half, but we just didn't capitalise on our play.

"We had some chances but with the way our luck is going at the moment, you saw what happened right at the end.

"When your luck is out that's the way it goes at times.”
