FC Groningen missed the chance to move into the top three of the Eredivisie after being held to yet another draw, although they will consider their 2-2 result at NAC Breda as a point gained rather than two lost.

Groningen were on a six-match unbeaten run coming into the game but would have been eager for a victory after being held to draws in three of their last four outings.

A win would have provisionally lifted them up to third, a point behind joint leaders FC Twente and Vitesse Arnhem, but in the end they would have been grateful just to avoid defeat after finding themselves 2-0 down with 10 minutes remaining.

After goals from Danny Verbeek (10 minutes) and Stipe Perica (74) put NAC in charge, Groningen gave themselves a lifeline when Giliano Wijnaldum and then Michael De Leeuw showed nerves of steel to slot home a stoppage-time penalty and salvage a 2-2 draw.

That result allowed Heerenveen to move to within two points of Groningen with a 3-1 win over Go Ahead Eagles.

Heerenveen trailed at half-time to an Erik Falkenburg goal just before the break but they quickly turned things round in the second half, with Marten de Roon (48) and Pele van Anholt (52) putting them ahead before Hakim Ziyech added a third late on.

FC Utrecht also battled back from a goal down to beat Heracles 2-1 and record a third win in four games, a brace from Jens Toornstra in the 55th and 81st minutes cancelling out a 27th-minute opener from Iliass Bel Hassani.

In Saturday's other game, PEC Zwolle drew for the fourth successive match after behind held 1-1 at home by third-bottom RKC.

Mustafa Saymak put Zwolle ahead on the stroke of half-time but RKC levelled six minutes into the second half through Aurelien Joachim.
