Yeovil lay solid foundations

Gary Johnson is hoping a hard-earned point from a goalless draw at Chesterfield can help Yeovil climb the table.

Johnson's team had taken only one point from their previous six games, but limited Chesterfield to few chances in a match that was short on incident and quality in the final third. The visitors had a great early chance to go ahead when a free-kick was flicked on in the ninth minute, but Kieffer Moore headed against the legs of Chesterfield goalkeeper Tommy Lee from six yards. Moore limped off after Chesterfield had strong penalty claims turned down when Jordan Clarke appeared to use his hand to block a cross in the 27th minute. The home side had a chance to break the deadlock five minutes into the second half when a slip by Liam Davis let top scorer Eoin Doyle in, but his shot was beaten away by Yeovil goalkeeper Jed Steer, who did well to keep out a deflected corner in stoppage time. "It was important we were solid," Johnson said. "We had three new players and had to blood them in as best we could so we tried to keep the ball and break on them. "Although you are not happy with just the one point, it's not a bad point from our position against a team that has been going quite well up until a couple of weeks ago. "I was proud of the boys because they worked their socks off. "The quality was a bit lacking at times, but we can build on this now and I was so pleased with the three new lads because they all affected the game." Chesterfield manager Paul Cook was able to take positives from the game despite his team's failure to find the net for the third game running. "It was probably a typical game for a team that is on the run we are on, very nervy in possession, but we defended quite well, we wanted to be more solid and play a higher line. "We've had a clean sheet at home, which we've not had a for a bit and it's a point. "It's a very unforgiving league, we've come up a league and we are on 20 points and if someone had offered me 20 points (at this stage) I'm sure I would have been ok. "We are trying to go forward, but now and again we get little hurdles and little obstacles to jump and sometimes they are not as easy as people think."
