Gregory questions own future

Crawley boss John Gregory raised doubts about his own future in charge of the club following their 1-1 home draw with Crewe.

.The former Aston Villa chief, 60, who took over last December, admitted to being "totally depressed" and said he needed to "look at himself" due to his team's inconsistent results this season. When asked whether he would be thinking over his own position in the next few days, Gregory, who completely overhauled his squad during the summer, replied: "I'll be thinking about lots of things. A second-half strike from Izale McLeod secured Crawley a point after teenager George Cooper had deservedly driven Crewe ahead in the 19th minute. Gregory said: "I'm very frustrated. In the end I'm relatively pleased to get something from the game that, at half-time, looked beyond us. "There is too much inconsistency. I need more consistency out of the players, so I need to look at myself from that respect. "I want a winning team and I want it to be better than this. "If my players perform to the standard that they can, we can threaten the top six, but there has been too much inconsistency and that bothers me. "I'm totally depressed. Players often blame managers and coaches for their own careers and I am going to have a long, hard look at myself as to whether I'm getting as much out of them as I should." Crewe boss Steve Davis was delighted with the way his young players adapted after drafting in six graduates from the club's academy to the starting line-up. Davis, who gave first starts to striker Danny Haynes and defender James Baillie, hailed the draw as a "brilliant result" and felt his young team showed "a lot of spirit." He said: "We had to show a lot of faith in the young players. "We've had to play more youngsters than we would have liked because of injuries and suspensions, but it was a brilliant result considering the group we had. "They showed a lot of spirit. Many of them haven't played yet and I thought they were excellent because they worked very hard for Crewe. "We can be proud that we have come here and got a positive result. "It was courageous performances from the players and, even though they found it hard going towards the end, they kept on going." Davis praised the contribution of teenager Cooper, who turned 18 this week, and believes that confidence in his Crewe squad is growing following a dismal start to the season. The Alex dropped to the bottom of Sky Bet League One after nine defeats in their opening 11 league games, but have since lost only one of their last five matches, conceding just three goals. Davis added: "George was the one bit of quality we had in the box and he produced a wonderful finish with his right foot to put us in front. "He worked tirelessly and was a real threat. We didn't keep the ball as well as we would have liked as a top three, but I can't fault effort or anything else. "The main bit of quality we showed in the box was for the goal. "To get something out of the game with all the injuries we had was terrific. "We've got to give these kids a go and they can be proud of this performance. It was a real honest display from the young players." Breaking news, transfer gossip, line ups and goal alerts from your football club - delivered direct to your mobile.
