York to make swift appointment

York hope to have their new manager in place in time for Saturday's home League Two game against Shrewsbury.

The Minstermen will waste no time in finding a replacement for Nigel Worthington, who resigned on Monday despite the club's determined bid to make him reconsider. Worthington, 52, guided York to the League Two play-offs in May - they lost to Fleetwood in the semi-finals - but Saturday's defeat at Newport left them above the relegation zone on goal difference. The club's communications manager Sophie Hicks said: "We spoke to some people (on Monday) and talks will continue (on Tuesday). "We're hoping to bring the new manager in before this weekend's game against Shrewsbury. "We've been encouraged by the number of people who have applied for the job, the calibre is very good. "Whoever it is has to be right for us. They need the relevant experience in this league, they have to be straightforward, hard-working and able to build a good relationship with us." York, looking for their ninth manager in 11 years, have a track record for moving swiftly in the managerial market. Former Northern Ireland and Norwich boss Worthington relished the challenge of establishing the club in the Football League following their Conference play-off final win in 2012, but quit after 19 months in the job. Hicks added: "Nigel said he took full responsibility for the signings and for the performances. "It had been going well on the training ground, he was always upbeat about that, but the players could not translate that into the games and he was frustrated. "He was very matter of fact about his decision. He felt he had taken the players as far as he could and his mind was made up. "We did all we could to persuade him to stay and he knew he had our complete support." Russ Wilcox, Worthington's assistant Steve Torpey, Micky Adams and James Beattie are the bookies' frontrunners for the job, while Neil Redfearn has also been linked.
