Haber puts country first

Crewe boss Steve Davis has revealed he tried to persuade striker Marcus Haber to skip international duty for Canada.

The Alex are currently rooted to the bottom of League One, six points from safety. Davis said he was disappointed with Haber's decision to link up with the national squad, meaning he will miss Saturday's match against Coventry. To compound Davis' frustrations, Coventry will have Canadian duo Simeon Jackson and Reda Johnson available after both elected to swerve call-ups from their country. "It was an interesting one with Marcus and I was made aware of the two Coventry lads saying that their club football was more important than an International friendly at the moment," Davis told the club's official club website. "I had the same conversation with Marcus when he was called up by Canada. "I asked the question and Marcus wanted to go. I can see both sides of the argument because it is his country, but from a club point of view we could do with him at a crucial time for us. "I will certainly be even more disappointed if he goes away for 10, 11 days and doesn't play because I would see that as a complete waste of time."
