Money welcomes overdue win

Cambridge head coach Richard Money felt his side's victory on Saturday was reward for their performances so far this season.

The U's secured their first win since the opening day of the campaign, thumping winless Carlisle 5-0. Issa Diallo lashed a fine opener from outside the box before braces by Robbie Simpson and debutant Jayden Stockley sealed a comprehensive win. Cambridge's last home game was a 2-1 defeat to Morecambe, despite the creation of numerous chances and a strong performance - something which Money alluded to after the game against the Cumbrians. "We were much better in both boxes," said Money. " I think the result was earned - not just today but last weekend as well. We just tried to keep them focused, make them understand that if we keep the work ethic and keep striving to get better then hopefully we'll be fine. "It was a really good performance from pretty much everyone in the group, and very good in both penalty boxes - which is crucial if you want to win games. "We've really tried to approach the games with a real sort of drive and purpose. Maybe we've opened ourselves up at times and maybe been a bit susceptible to the counter attack so we tried to reign it in a little bit but still give our players the freedom to go and score. "We carried pretty much most of our game plan to the letter. There are more good signs for the future and that's what we're trying to achieve." Meanwhile, Carlisle boss Graham Kavanagh was scathing of his players after they collapsed following the first Cambridge goal. Simpson's double came within twenty minutes of Diallo's opener, effectively ending the contest before half-time. "I'm shellshocked," said Kavanagh. "We actually started really well in the first 15 or 20 minutes, we were on top and we were having the chances. "They didn't have one chance but we didn't score a goal. As soon as we conceded the first goal I thought it would be interesting to see what character we had. After that it was a complete shambles. "Every time they went forward they looked like they were going to score. I went to a 4-4-2, it's the most simple formation you can possibly play. You've got to go up against your man, you've got to compete. They played 4-4-2 and we didn't do it. Some of them need to realise the level they're playing at. "In the second half it was getting rid of the ball as quickly as we could, and it was absolutely awful. If that's the team that's representing me then I'm disgusted.
