Wilcox delight at Llera capture

Scunthorpe boss Russ Wilcox has praised "quality" new signing Miguel Llera, claiming the Spaniard improves the quality of his squad.

Llera signed a one-year deal with the Iron after playing on trial in their pre-season friendly with Huddersfield, following his release from Sheffield Wednesday at the end of last season. He told the club's website: "We're delighted to get the deal done. "Everybody saw what he can add to the team in the game against Huddersfield and he's got a good presence. "He's 6ft 4in, he has great ability with the ball and he has massive experience so I'm delighted with the signing." Llera joins to provide competition to the side, following Miles Addison through the doors at Glanford Park after centre-back David Mirfin was ruled out for the start of the season. But Wilcox insists a place in the starting XI is not guaranteed. He continued: "It's now down to him. "There are positions up for grabs and I've just about got competition every position. "Miguel adds great quality to the group. "I think he showed his passing ability in the Huddersfield game and now we've stepped up to League One, ball retention becomes more important. "You're playing against better opposition and if you keep giving the ball back to them then you're going to get punished and he can add that passing ability to us. "I want to play more football now we've stepped up a league and he'll help us to do that."
