Davis playing a cool hand

Crewe manager Steve Davis said he was in no rush to make signings after a summer of frustration in the transfer window.

The Alex have only recruited one player - former Rotherham goalkeeper Scott Shearer - but Davis is not unduly concerned. He told the club's website: "We will only do what we think is right for us. "There will be no knee jerk reaction here. We know what we have to bring in and have identified our targets." Striker Max Clayton appears set to leave the club, as he is out of contract and currently on trial with Sunderland, while Kelvin Mellor, Byron Moore and four other players have left Gresty Road since the end of the season. But Davis, whose side narrowly avoided relegation last season, will focus on bringing in quality rather than quantity. He added: "We will take our time because we want the right ones. "We don't have to go out and bring in 10-12 players. We only need two or three quality players to improve us. "We are fortunate to have a strong academy here and supplement our squad that way."
