Brown happy with Southend prep

Southend manager Phil Brown insists he is happy with his early preparations for the coming season.

The Shrimpers squad will return for pre-season training at the end of the month as they gear up for a spate of friendly fixures, including matches against QPR, Ipswich and Braintree. Brown told the club's website: "We had good tests against Great Wakering and Braintree last season before we got under way. "I was a bit sceptical last season because of all the upheaval we had before we got under way, but we had a fantastic pre-season and started really well. "We would love that to be the case again this season. The pre-season friendlies are very important and I'm happy with the ones we've got sorted so far. "Just like last season, we're building up to the bigger games against the likes of Ipswich and QPR, who should give us a real test at Roots Hall." Brown is also hoping a pre-season tour can be arranged to ensure his charges are in peak physical condition. He added: "We're looking to try and fit a pre-season tour in and I'm hopeful we can get away to give the lads a change of environment, just as we did last season. "Nothing has been confirmed yet, but hopefully we can get things sorted in the next couple of weeks, so we know our plans for when we all return at the end of the month."
