Yates fumes at Jombati error

Mark Yates felt Sido Jombati's incredible own goal summed up Cheltenham's season as they ended with a 3-2 defeat to Dagenham.

Skipper Steve Elliott had given the Robins the perfect start only for his hard work to be undone by his fellow defender's woeful equaliser, Jombati curling a back pass beyond debutant goalkeeper Connor Roberts from 25 yards. "The own goal sums us up this season," Yates said. "You will have to ask Sido what he was trying to do. It was one of the worst I've seen. "We had asked them to try and play and knock the ball around the back and at times we did that well. But it was a hell of a ball for Connor to have to deal with - I felt really sorry for him. He knew he couldn't handle it - maybe in hindsight he should and given away an indirect free-kick. It was a terrible ball. "When you are giving goals away like we have been doing then it is mind-boggling. There are only eight teams who have scored more than us but at the other end, there are only two clubs who have conceded more than us; that has been the main problem." Yates handed full league debuts to keeper Roberts and midfielders Zack Kotwica and Joe Hanks with striker Harry Williams making just his third start. "We know that the young boys have a bit of talent and it is up to us to nurture it and get it out there as much as we can," he added. "Today was the right time to give them a go and, particularly in the first half, their movement was good and they kept it well. "We need to recruit properly and need to try and make sure everything is better than it has been this season." The Daggers twice came from behind before wrapping up the win midway through the second half. Defender Scott Doe cancelled out a Matt Richards effort in the closing seconds of the first period before Adebayo Azeez slotted home the winner after a Gavin Hoyte effort had been pushed onto the post.
