Cook hails Spireites character

Paul Cook saluted his Chesterfield players as they homed in on automatic promotion following a 2-1 win at Hartlepool.

The Spireites are five points ahead of fourth-placed Fleetwood with four games to go after coming from behind to win at Pools, who have now lost five games in a row. After dropping two points in a flat home draw with Newport the previous week, victory in the North-East sets Cook's side up for a double Easter programme in which they could clinch a return to League One. "It was a good performance, we played well," said Cook. "We keep getting knocks in football, things that set you back and we overcame them. "We were up against a very good Hartlepool team, who have some really bright young players who will never lie down. "I thought our character shone through, especially in the second half when we had the lead and had to withstand some pressure. "Our midfield got a firm grip on it and, at this stage of the season, we are very pleased. "Last week we dropped a point against Newport and people got very antagonised with the outcome, but it's about the end of the season and the top three are the three who deserve to be promoted. "We want to be in there, of course we do, but so do five or six others. There's some way to go - four games and points to play for."
