Yates curses Deering miss

Cheltenham boss Mark Yates was left to rue a golden chance spurned by Sam Deering in injury time in their 1-1 draw by Exeter.

The midfielder blew the chance to secure a 10th straight win for Cheltenham against Exeter from 10 yards out. The Grecians had gone in front when Jordan Moore-Taylor flicked in from Craig Woodman's cross for his first professional goal, but Cheltenham earned a share of the spoils when Byron Harrison capitalised on some poor defending to poke the ball past Exeter goalkeeper Christy Pym. "We had good chances but there were chances at both ends," Yates said. "It was a tight game and we weren't at our best. But we dug in at times and got a bit lucky at times. "We probably had the clearer chances and in the 92nd minute, we were just thinking just roll it in an empty net and game over. "But that sums up his luck and confidence in front of goal. I am not going to start criticising him for that now. He knows he should score and I thought he was going to smash it in. It doesn't get any better 10 yards out and in the centre of the goal. But we could have been here talking about a win. "Exeter started really brightly and we weathered it. We could have played better second half and we didn't do what we set out to do. We weren't in control of the game; there were too many losses of possession in good areas which resulted in them attacking us. But we stood strong and I am pleased with a point."
