Wilcox: Team takes credit

Scunthorpe manager Russ Wilcox is refusing to take credit to his phenomenal start to life at Glanford Park.

Wilcox saw his unbeaten run since replacing Brian Laws in November stretch to 25 games with a 1-0 win over Torquay at the weekend. The Football League record had been 23 games, set back in 1889 by Preston boss William Sudell, before Wilcox came along. But the man himself has downplayed his role and believes the success is down to the players. "It's down to the group. It has to be," he told the Iron's official website. "It's an achievement for Scunthorpe United. That's the way you have to look at it. I'm just the man at the top if you like. "I obviously have to give guidance, but I've got a great set of players and people to work with which certainly helps." Saturday's victory moved the Iron level on points with Rochdale at the top of the table. But Wilcox is keeping focused on a ensuring a top-three finish and promotion to Sky Bet League Two. "We're looking at top three first," he said. "We'd all love to win it, don't get me wrong, but the first focus is getting over the line for the top three. If we do that then we'll be moving on to the title."
