Micky Adams is considering his future as Port Vale boss after being abused by travelling fans at the end of a 5-0 loss to Bristol City.
The Vale manager took his players over to the supporters to thank them for making the trip to Ashton Gate, but some used the opportunity to unleash a torrent of foul language.
Jay Emmanuel-Thomas and Sam Baldock bagged braces and Nyron Nosworthy was on target as City condemned Vale, who had Carl Dickinson sent off, to a first defeat in three matches.
After Tuesday night's League One clash, Adams said: "I have been abused by fans before, but this was unacceptable. Some of what was said was disgusting.
"I'll leave my future until the end of the season, but it is up in the air at the moment the way I am feeling.
"I have been thinking about whether my course at this football club has run. If my players had walked off the pitch without acknowledging the fans, we would have been slaughtered.
"I made a point of getting them to thank the fans and that isn't good enough either. I am going to have a real think about where I go now.
"We were beaten by a better side and I'm disappointed with our efforts, but football people around the country believe we are having a good season."
