Davis looks on bright side

Crewe boss Steve Davis took plenty of positives from the 1-1 draw at Walsall despite seeing them blow the chance of a vital victory.

Chuks Aneke put Crewe in front with a low shot - his 15th goal of the season - in the 51st minute when a strike from Mathias Pogba rebounded to him following a low cross from Cameron Park. For a long time that looked good enough to give them only their second win in seven games. Bradden Inman could have wrapped it up for the visitors in a quick break 12 minutes from time following a Walsall corner, but he was caught on the edge of the box before he could shoot. But Crewe defender Mark Ellis had the misfortune to turn the ball past his own goalkeeper Ben Garratt as he tried to clear Milan Lalkovic's cross while being put under pressure by Michael Ngoo. Crewe manager Steve Davis said: "I think we were a bit unfortunate not to win, but unfortunately that's how it goes a times. Players become a bit anxious towards the end of the game when you are in the position we are. "I am pleased with a point but I think we deserved all three. If we keep playing like that we shall get enough points to be safe. Eight of our 10 games are against teams around us in the table, and three of the next four are at home. "I am gutted for the players because they deserved more than that. Chuks Aneke was always the likely scorer for us and he also held the ball up well and got in some good defensive headers too "There is plenty of spirit and determination in the camp, we were just really unlucky. Our supporters were terrific and really got behind the team, then applauded them off at the end for their efforts, and players respond to that. If they get behind us like that at home it will be important."
