Hasselbaink: We should have won

Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink claimed his Burton side deserved a win at York despite only securing a point in a 1-1 draw.

Substitute McGurk curled the ball into Bobby Olejnik's bottom left-hand corner with a late effort, which looked like it was intended as a cross. Debutant Emile Sinclair had earlier given York the lead on 70 minutes but McGurk's goal made it eight games unbeaten for the Brewers and left Russ Wilcox's men still searching for their second home win of the campaign. Ex-Chelsea and Holland striker Hasselbaink said: "I think York edged the game during the first half. They were very dangerous on the counter and gave us some problems but, second half, I thought there was only one team in it. "We played really well with the ball and we had a few chances. We were unlucky with those and I think it was a little undeserved to find ourselves one goal behind. "I've not seen the footage back yet, but my instinct was that their goal was offside. But you can't get them all. "We deserved three points but I'm happy with the performance. They are fighting for their lives and we had to match them. "The boys did ever so well in the second half. We created and we deserved a better result but it wasn't meant to be. "I'm pleased with the character of everybody. That's what we need. "We need a squad where everyone complements each other and we need togetherness. It's not going to be 11 who see us through the league, it will be the whole squad." Hasselbaink also hailed McGurk as he ended a goal drought stretching back to September 7. "It was a great moment for Adam," the Burton chief added. "He's had a difficult time of late but you could see he was willing, he was positive and he deserved his bit of luck." In contrast to Hasselbaink, York boss Wilcox felt his team were cruelly denied the three points their performance merited. After going close twice during the first half, Sinclair prodded the ball in from a couple of yards following a clever free-kick routine involving fellow new boy Malvind Benning, Michael Coulson, Jake Hyde and John McCombe. Coulson's rising drive was also well saved smartly at his near post by Jon McLaughlin before McGurk's late leveller, prompting Wilcox to reason: "I thought we were outstanding and deserved to take all three points. "We just couldn't quite get the second goal and their keeper was probably man of the match. We worked hard and I said to the players afterwards that they had set a benchmark for the rest of the season because we looked the better side against a team second in the division. "We created the best opportunities and I'm just disappointed that their player has scored with a cross that he hit with his wrong foot."
