York defence frustrates Wilcox

Image: Russ Wilcox: Bewildered by York's defensive frailties

York manager Russ Wilcox slammed his side's defending as AFC Wimbledon secured a 3-2 victory at Bootham Crescent.

Victory represented the Wombles' first league triumph on the road since mid-August, while York remain the only team in English football's top five tiers not to have won a home game this term. On-loan Millwall defender Jake Goodman gave the visitors a 24th-minute lead against the Minstermen, who replied through Diego De Girolamo ten minutes after the interval. But two goals in as many minutes put Neal Ardley's men in the ascendancy with Sean Rigg and Matt Tubbs both scoring from close range following right-wing George Francomb crosses on 62 and 64 minutes respectively. York responded with a scrambled Stephane Zubar effort on 75 minutes but it only proved a consolation as the hosts stretched their sorry run to a 13th match. A disappointed Wilcox said: "Our defending was very poor and that's what cost us the game in a nutshell. We have been solid in most games since I arrived but this match was a freebie for Wimbledon. "If they had carved us open because we were playing a more attacking system, then you are the first to put your hand up but you wouldn't see some of the goals we conceded on a Sunday morning. Wimbledon didn't need to work hard enough for their goals. "They were all gimmes and they then managed the game well, which was frustrating because I expected eight or nine minutes to go up at the end and we didn't get that. But the bottom line is we need to be better in both boxes. "We had three or four good chances that we didn't take and we need to show a killer instinct. You also can't afford to give goals away." AFC Wimbledon chief Ardley, meanwhile, sung the praises of 21-year-old centre-back Goodman, who scored his first senior goal on his full League debut for the South London outfit to set the ball rolling. "He's a big, strong boy and he gives us something slightly different," Ardley pointed out. "He is 6 ft 3 inches and has massive shoulders on him. "Though we are expecting him to be a little bit raw at times because he's an under-21 player, he's surprised us and has come in and won all of his headers and has risen to all his challenges so far." Goodman headed Wimbledon ahead when he met Francomb's corner in at the far post with a downward header that beat home keeper Alex Cisak far too easily. York responded when De Girolamo netted his fourth goal on loan from Sheffield United, blasting in from 15 yards after Michael Coulson's short corner. The shot skimmed off Goodman's head but Rigg then prodded in from close range and Tubbs headed in his 13th of the season. On-loan Bournemouth defender Zubar went on to score his first goal for the Minstermen, but it was too little, too late.
