Wilcox basks in York win

Russ Wilcox basked in a "huge win" after watching York emerge from their match against Hartlepool with a 3-1 win and three points.

Centre-back Keith Lowe was the unlikely hero, twice heading beyond Scott Flinders before Jake Hyde's cool finish capped a remarkable turnaround as City grabbed three quick goals after the interval. Such a riposte hardly appeared likely in the opening period as Pools dominated amid Scott Fenwick marking his first professional start with a goal. The win ensured York rose to 20th in the table, while Pools remain rooted to the bottom. Wilcox subsequently showered praise on his players, saying: "I thought that was a fantastic second-half performance. "For us moving forward as a club, that was a huge win. It was a mental test more than a physical one. "I thought we looked leggy in the first half but to come back from being 1-0 down away from home took terrific spirit. "I thought we saw the game out fairly comfortably after going ahead and it was a huge three points." Asked what he said to his players at half time to spark the turnaround, Wilcox added: "I think it's down to the players. "I tried to stay positive and it was great to get that next goal because that is always key. "To get that in front of our fans, who were absolutely outstanding, was key. It's great for them to go home happy, although they may be as happy as me." His emotions were in stark contrast to those felt by opposite number Paul Murray, whose side now sit six points adrift of safety. "I am scratching my head and I will be all weekend," he said. "We played some of the best stuff I have seen and had chances. "You always worry that if you don't take chances, you could be punished. You have got to be clinical. "But even then, I never thought they would come out and score three goals in 10 minutes. "We have thrown the game away - it's as simple as that. We're obviously very disappointed; it's devastating really because we should have an extra three points." One of the positives, though, was seeing Fenwick enjoy a dream start in the Football League ranks. Murray added: "It was a great moment for him. It was his home debut, he has scored and had a great game. But he had other chances that he will be kicking himself about."
