The statement read: "He was interviewed for the job on Sunday, offered it on Monday and decided to accept the role after considering it overnight.

"Whilst clearly very disappointed to lose the manager`s services, we understand his desire to work at a higher level again and the board would like to thank both he and Ross County FC for the professional manner in which the negotiations took place.

"We would also like to place on record our thanks for his services over the past 15 months and acknowledgement that he achieved all the targets set for him in that time. We believe he leaves the club well equipped to push for a play-off place in the Championship again despite the quality of clubs at this level this season.

"The process to find a replacement manager will begin immediately."

Ross County sacked manager Derek Adams and his father George, who was director of football at Dingwall, following a poor start to their top-flight campaign.

The Staggies are currently bottom of the Scottish Premiership table after losing their opening five matches.
