Hamburg have apologised to Franck Ribery after a pitch invader hit the Bayern Munich winger with a scarf during their DFB-Pokal clash on Wednesday night.

The spectator ran onto the pitch at the Imtech Arena in injury-time of Bayern's 3-1 win and swung the scarf at Ribery before swearing at the Frenchman and finally being accosted by stewards.

Ribery, who scored Bayern's third, did not retaliate and told broadcaster ARD: "That is a difficult situation. I could not see him coming and was somewhat cross afterwards. That shouldn't happen, but it's not so bad."

Ribery's team-mate Thomas Muller was quoted by Bild as describing the incident as "totally pointless".

Hamburg said sorry to Ribery on Twitter, posting: "Dear @FCBayern, dear Franck #Ribery. We apologise for what happened shortly before the end. That is not #HSV! #HSVFCB."

Bayern accepted the apology, tweeting back: "Great gesture, @HSV. #Respekt."
