Transfer guide

Norwich suffered from a lack of goals last season, but have already moved to sign Ricky Van Wolfswinkel. That is potentially a good bit of business, but €12million represents a fair chunk of Chris Hughton's budget. From now on, further spending may depend on departures at Carrow Road.

We break down who Norwich should be signing and weigh up how much cash might be in the transfer kitty.

What's been said: "It's our responsibility to try and work as hard as we can which is what we are trying to do. It is not always easy as there are 19 other teams in this division trying to do the same, but hopefully we are successful in some of the work we do. We are delighted how we finished and there's no doubt we have a good and competitive squad but if we can add to it then it will be beneficial to us" - Chris Hughton. The budget: History suggests not a huge amount, but having prudently survived in the Premier League for a couple of years, Norwich are a side that are presumably reasonably financially secure, so could thus use the increased television money due this year to really make a few moves. What's needed: A striker will be top of the list. Even with the forthcoming arrival of Ricky van Wolfswinkel, Norwich's striking options look slim, with Grant Holt's first season looking like a top-flight outlier, while Lucciano Becchio simply isn't a Premier League player. Indeed, their two main problems last season were drawing too many games and not scoring enough goals - only QPR and Stoke scored fewer. The good news for Norwich is the Van Wolfswinkel signing suggests they are moving away from their 'buy from the Championship and hope for the best' transfer policy of recent years and perhaps looking a little further afield. Celtic isn't that far afield, but talk of another move for Gary Hooper has surfaced again. Beyond the forward line, another winger, someone else to play in central midfield and some defensive cover should see them right. It does depend slightly on what their ambitions are - do Norwich see themselves as a side happy to survive, or perhaps push on further and aim for the top half of the table? Indeed, in order to address the goal problem, why not make an ambitious play for an attacking midfielder who can score, much like Southampton did with Gaston Ramirez last year? Of course, they might not have the resources that the Saints do, but a little ambition goes a long way... Ideal signing:Van Wolfswinkel's signing means that Gary Hooper is no longer a necessity. However, someone with the quality and versatility of Shaun Maloney would be a useful recruit. Sky Bet: Norwich are possibly the least prominent side in our Transfer Specials, which is unsurprising given their modest movements in previous windows. They moved quickly to address their problems in finding the net in signing Ricky van Wolfswinkel and they have also been backed to sign Gary Hooper, who they missed out on in January. However, Hull are now favourites to sign the Celtic striker after offering £4m, so it remains to be seen whether the Canaries will be up for a bidding war having previously failed to meet Celtic's valuation. A move for Jonjo Shelvey has also been suggested in the media but such a deal is rated at 8/1, with Arsenal 9/4 favourites to land the Liverpool youngster.
