Italy still in pole position after being frustrated by Northern Ireland

Italy remained on course to qualify for Euro 2012 after their goalless draw against Northern Ireland left them top of Group C. A win for Estonia moved them up to second, while basement dwellers the Faroe Islands were easily dispatched by Slovenia. The Italians will be disappointed not to have extended their lead at the summit of the table, but Northern Ireland's valiant point keeps their faint hopes of qualification alive.

Blitz

Two goals in a 10 minute second-half period set up Estonia for a surprise win over Serbia. Tarmo Kink equalised for Estonia three minutes after Nikola Zigic had given them the lead on the hour mark. Konstantin Vassiljev notched the second on 73 minutes before an own-goal at the end of the game from Aleksandar Lukovic sealed their fate.
Hat-trick
A stunning hat-trick from Tim Matavz gave Slovenia a convincing 5-1 win over the group's whipping boys, the Faroe Islands. The Groningen striker opened the scoring after 25 minutes and doubled his and his country's tally 10 minutes later. He completed his hat-trick on 64 minutes before a penalty from team-mate Milivoje Novakovic six minutes later further extended their lead. Substitute Zlatko Dedic added another for the winners before Christian Mouritsen pulled one back in the final minute to add some respectability to the scoreline.
