Sky Sports Originals documentary follows Gibraltar's incredible journey to Germany

It's the ultimate David vs Goliath story for UEFA's smallest member country

With a population of fewer than 30,000, the British Overseas Territory of Gibraltar (also known as ‘The Rock’) is one of the unlikeliest football hotbeds in the world.

But after being granted full member status by UEFA (in the face of fierce opposition from Spain), Gibraltar is competing in the European Championship qualifiers for the first time. On November 14 they faced current world champions Germany in Nuremberg.

Gibraltar - No Rock Unturned

In Gibraltar: No Rock Unturned, Sky Sports Originals goes behind the scenes with full access on and off the pitch to the largely amateur Gibraltar squad, including firemen, port-workers, policemen and border guards, through the qualifying campaign up to the Germany match.

Amongst their ranks are Preston North End’s Scott Wiseman, ex-Crewe and Morecambe defender David Artell and former Portsmouth midfielder Liam Walker.

They don’t get off to the best of starts when they lose a warm-up game to the Faroe Islands 4-1 at home. From there they have to pick themselves up and prepare for the toughest qualification group in the competition which, as well as Germany, also features Poland, Scotland and the Republic of Ireland.

We follow manager Allen Bula and his assistant David Wilson as they try to get a squad together that can compete in the big time and see how the tensions and pressures grow as the harsh realities of life among Europe’s elite become apparent.

In the end it’s the ultimate test in front of more than 40,000 fans in Nuremburg as tiny Gibraltar take on the might of Germany.

In turn moving, touching and funny, this is the ultimate David vs Goliath story in football.

Watch ‘Gibraltar: No Rock Unturned’ at 7pm this Sunday on Sky Sports 1, or available on Sky Go and On Demand now.
