Villa fans: right to be unhappy, says Yorke

Former Aston Villa forward Dwight Yorke was scathing in his assessment of his old club's performance against Manchester City - describing their defeat as not acceptable.

Alex McLeish's men slumped to a 1-0 loss in front of their home fans after Joleon Lescott took advantage of some slack defending at a set-piece to score the only goal of the game.

Villa have not won at home since November 5, seven games ago, and Yorke was unimpressed with their efforts against the Premier League leaders.

"I am an Aston Villa fan and it's a matter of concern. It is just not acceptable," Yorke, who scored 98 goals in 287 appearances for Villa told Sky Sports.

"The performance was pretty bad, apart from the final two minutes of the game when they showed a little bit of intent.

Disbelief

"If you look at the overall performance, it was not good. It was not good on the eye and the match facts show that 65 per cent of possession went to City and 35 per cent went to Villa, who were the home team.

"I looked at the Holte End and there was no passion from the Villa fans. They were sitting there in disbelief.

"It was always going to be a difficult task for McLeish coming from Birmingham as a manager. But the facts are there: they are lying in 15th place and the performances have not been good."

New Wales manager Chris Coleman added: "They (City) were comfortable. In the last two or three minutes Villa put a bit of pressure on but offensively Villa can do a lot better.

"Today City were really in fourth or fifth gear, they never really had to go any higher than that - it was enough to win the game."

Team spirit

With Manchester City striker Carlos Tevez set to return to England this week, Coleman believes the controversial marksman could yet play a major role in the title race.

Asked if he would take Tevez back, Coleman said: "If he was going to win me the title, yes.

"They have obviously got good team spirit and work effort at Man City. If Carlos Tevez's arrival and presence within that group of players is not going to damage anything, then you have got to take him back because his ability is top class."
