No Pompey regrets for Ashdown

Goalkeeper happy to have stayed at Fratton Park

Jamie Ashdown thinks that this season is among the sweetest of his Portsmouth career. The goalkeeper was facing the Pompey scrapheap last summer when the club told him there was no chance of a new deal. But Ashdown hung around and was rewarded when Steve Cotterill re-signed him following David James' decision to leave. And the 30-year-old, who went 636 straight minutes without conceding earlier this year, told The News: "I'm really glad I waited and signed now. I know I made the right decision. "I could have been edgy at the beginning of the season and thought, 'Portsmouth haven't done me any favours' and gone somewhere else. I could have done that to spite the club and gone elsewhere. "The first year at the club and this year have been the best years for me. The first season I played some games in the Premier League, but this season has been brilliant for me."
