Adams lauds debutant Green

Micky Adams was impressed by new Tranmere loanee George Green after he scored on his debut to secure a 1-1 draw with AFC Wimbledon.

Adebayo Akinfenwa's first-half strike looked like earning all three points for the Dons but on-loan Everton midfielder Green netted late on for Rovers - who still tumbled into the relegation zone. On Green, Adams joked: "I think the boy lacks confidence doesn't he? It was a terrific performance and he has fantastic ability and I think he'll be a big player for us in the next seven games. "It's as if he's been here all of his career. For a loan player to come here and have that type of impact is remarkable, but Joe Royle and Roberto Martinez spoke very highly of him. "I thought we'd done enough to win it. I would have been bitterly disappointed to have lost it and not got anything out of the game so to nick a point at the end - we'll gladly accept that and move on to the next one. "I thought we showed a lot of character. I'm really pleased for the boys that we've got something out of it. What we've seen is a lot of character from the boys after going behind at home yet again." The visitors led on the half-hour mark through Akinfenwa, whose weak right-foot shot from the edge of the box took a deflection that deceived keeper Peter Brezovan. But deep into injury time Green - who had been denied numerous times in the second half - curled a stunning left-foot shot into the top corner. However more drama was to follow and Dons assistant Neil Cox was incensed his side weren't given a late penalty when Janoi Donacien appeared to bundle over Adebayo Azeez in the box. "It was a definite penalty. I think that was the sixth time now that we've had an opportunity of a penalty, especially late on in a game, and we haven't got it," said Cox. "The referee's in a perfect position, he knows it's time up and he's got to give a big decision, that's his job to give a big decision at the end of the game and he doesn't give it. "He doesn't have to go down, he's blatantly been brought down. Even their bench went 'oh no it's definitely a penalty'. If you've got to make a decision in the first minute or make it in the last minute, it's important that you make the right one. Obviously he didn't make the right one. "We are disappointed, but let's give Tranmere credit. They put us under all sorts of pressure in the second half. But I've got to give a lot of credit to our boys as well and I thought we defended well."
