Bury boss Richie Barker believes midfielder Peter Sweeney is enjoying the benefits of a tough summer on the training field.
Sweeney has displayed inspirational form in Bury's current run of three consecutive League One wins, scoring a sensational goal in the 4-2 win at Walsall and earning a nomination for the division's player of the month award.
While never doubting the 27-year-old Scot's ability, Barker believes improved fitness has given him an extra edge.
"There has never been any doubt about Peter's technical ability, it was just about getting matches," he told the Bury Times.
"He worked extremely hard in the summer and has brought that into the the season. He is now reaping the rewards with some excellent performances."
On Sweeney's award nomination, Barker added: "I'm delighted for Peter (but) I reckon they should rename the awards 'team of the month' because my lads have been fantastic in the last month."
