Palace defender now keen to keep his place in side

Crystal Palace defender Adam Barrett has admitted he was contemplating a loan move before forcing his way into the side. Barrett joined the Eagles in the summer after being released by Southend but struggled to secure a spot in George Burley's first-team plans. The 30-year-old had made just one reserve appearance in the last two months before completing his first 90 minutes for the club in Saturday's defeat to Swansea. Barrett impressed against the Swans, despite being on the wrong end of a 3-0 scoreline, but revealed he had considered heading away from Selhurst Park to keep up his fitness.

Opening

However, having waited patiently for a place in the first XI, he is now determined to ensure he does not find himself back on the sidelines. He told the South London Press: "I was fourth choice and I needed to be playing because I wanted to be match-fit if the club need me. "A loan was something that I was looking at. "But then Claude Davis got sent off and Anthony Gardner got injured - it gave me an opening and I'm determined to make the most of it."
