Newell hopeful of bringing Leeds midfielder back to Blundell Park

Mike Newell has confirmed Grimsby Town are doing 'everything possible' to sign Peter Sweeney from Leeds United. Sweeney finished last season on loan with the Mariners and made eight appearances during his time with the League Two club. He is wanted back at Blundell Park on a permanent basis and Newell is hoping a deal can be agreed with Leeds to capture the 25-year-old. "The chairman is working hard on that, Ian Fleming's working hard on that," Newell told the club's official website. "We'll do everything possible to try and persuade the player that this is the place he should come to play. "I know he enjoyed his time here. It was a successful time. If you look at the rest of the season, those last 12 or so games were our most successful spell. "He is a good lad on and off the pitch and he has good ability. I have said it before that he is a player I am really keen on and I would like to get him to Grimsby. It is something we are working on. "There's all sorts of influences and other factors that have a bearing on it."
