Mick McCarthy claims he leaves Wolves with his 'head held high' and says it was 'a privilege' to boss the club for five-and-a-half years.
A 5-1 defeat to arch-rivals West Brom proved to be the final straw for the Molineux board, with McCarthy relieved of his duties 24 hours after that derby humbling.
During his time with the club he helped to take them back into the Premier League and consolidate in the top-flight.
He is understandably disappointed to have been removed from his post without being given the chance to turn things around this season, but has no axe to grind with the club.
"I have had nearly six great years here and it's been fabulous," McCarthy told
Sky Sports News HD as he made his way out of the club's training ground.
Privilege
"I'm leaving with my head held high, that's for sure.
"I think we have had more happy memories than sad. It's sad that I left on a bad note, with the game last night, but that's the way it happens.
"For five-and-a-half years I've had a fabulous time. It's been a privilege. Onwards and upwards."
Asked if it had been emotional saying his goodbyes, McCarthy added: "Of course it is. I have left a lot of friends in there, really good close friends. It's been great."
McCarthy is planning to get back into management as soon as possible, having previously worked with Millwall, the Republic of Ireland national side and Sunderland.
"I'll pop up somewhere," he said as he drove away.
