Germany coach Joachim Low was happy to see his side get off to a winning start at Euro 2012 after beating Portugal 1-0 but admitted there is room for improvement.
Mario Gomez's expert header after 72 minutes was the only goal of the game, which was his reward for a positive attitude having missed earlier chances.
The win puts Germany level on three points in Group B with Denmark, who also won their opening game against Holland.
Germany will face Holland on Wednesday and Low knows his side will have to improve as an attacking force for that game.
"It was a really close game, but it has given us a good start," said Low.
"We did well in defence; we worked hard which wasn't always the case in our warm-up game.
"We have work to do up front with the tempo, it was there in phases, but we have to be more consistent."
