Portugal and Denmark both won convincingly to sit three points clear of Norway in first and second respectively.
Denmark seized the early initiative in the three-way battle for a top two place in Group H by storming into a four goal lead against Cyprus within 22 minutes.
Lars Jacobsen, Michael Krohn-Dehli and a brace from Dennis Rommedahl put Morten Olsen's men in complete control in Nicosia.
Andreas Avram pulled one back for Cyprus but they could not prevent falling to a fifth qualifying defeat that keeps them bottom and put Denmark briefly top.
Double
Portugal responded to Denmark's win by making a scintillating start of their own at home to Iceland.
Manchester United winger Nani hit a quick-fire double on 13 and 22 minutes to put Paulo Bento's men in control.
Former Tottenham striker Helder Postiga made it three just before the break before Aron Gunnarsson brought the visitors back into the game three minutes into the second period.
Hallgrimur Jonasson pulled another goal back with 22 minutes left to set up a nervy finish.
But the home side responded in fine fashion with goals from Joao Moutinho and Eliseu making a Gylfi Sigurdsson stoppage time penalty meaningless, the 5-3 win sending Portugal back to the top of the group.
Portugal only need a point against Denmark in Copenhagen on Tuesday to take them to a seventh successive major championship finals.
