Schalke have parted company with coach Huub Stevens after a run of six Bundesliga games without a win.
The Gelsenkirchen-based club said that Stevens agreed to leave "by mutual consent" after talks with management on Sunday morning.
Assistant coach Markus Gisdol was also released with immediate effect.
The 59-year-old was in his second spell at the club, the Dutchman taking over after Ralf Rangnick stepped down due to fatigue in September 2011.
Schalke's U17 team coach Jens Keller will take charge of the first team ahead of Tuesday's German Cup game against Mainz.
Despite their poor domestic form, Schalke have been going well in the Champions League, finishing top of the group and beating Arsenal at the Emirates in the process.
