French star speaks out about Smith treatment

Former Rangers midfielder Jerome Rothen has signalled his dissatisfaction with the club's decision to try to offload their star players. The French midfielder, who joined the club on deadline day of last summer, was not a figure of great success at Ibrox, making just eight appearances for the club before being offloaded to Turkish club Ankaragucu. The 32-year-old was critical of the Rangers board, who attempted to offload Madjid Bougherra in the January transfer window to manage their debts. "They wanted to save money. With the salary I had, they would save at least six months worth if they move me along," the player told So Foot magazine. "They moved on Pedro Mendes, who went to Sporting Lisbon. "They also wanted Bougherra to leave, but he didn't accept. He said he wouldn't be leaving until June."

Rothen, a former Champions League finalist with Monaco in 2004, was part of the Rangers side that were humiliated by Romanian club Unirea Urziceni with a 4-1 defeat at Ibrox in October. The player did not play a game since, and was critical of Gers boss Walter Smith for his handling of the situation, who refused to play him in the reverse fixture against Unirea, opting for youngster John Fleck despite a number of injuries. "He put a youth at 18 years old on the right. He put youths who hadn't even trained with us before on the bench along with me. I was the nanny." Rothen added. "He dismissed me without saying anything. "I didn't open my mouth but I said to myself that it could not possibly be a sporting decision. "Maybe the coach wanted me to rest for a while, but I started asking myself questions after three games."
