Christmas cheer for Westley

Image: Graham Westley: Pleased with the points

Graham Westley expressed his delight after Stevenage claimed only their second away win with a 2-0 victory against Dagenham.

Charlie Lee smashed in the opener from close range after Dean Wells header hit the crossbar. And Chris Whelpdale sealed the points when he fired past Cousins from inside the box to give Stevenage a first away success in the league since August 30. And Stevenage's manager was satisfied with the performance of his team at Victoria Road. Westley said: "A good clean sheet, a goal from a set play and a well worked goal from our own open play and what you would expect to see from a Stevenage side. "We haven't been good away from home on getting on top of oppositions and dulling the home atmosphere, but I thought we did that very well. "I think they played slightly different to how we expected so we had to adjust in the early parts of the game. "It was a good team performance and I thought the whole unit went about their work in a very disciplined way and you could see they have looked after themselves in the Christmas period. "The work ethic of the players was exceptional and the togetherness and the spirit." Daggers assistant manager Darren Currie admitted his team did not show enough quality in the final third of the pitch. He said: "The start of the second half is where it went wrong. "I thought we were alright in the first half and were probably the better side. If we had a little more quality around the final third it could have seen us potentially get the first goal and then the game would have possibly been very different. "We didn't start the second half particularly well and we allowed them to get three corner kicks in the first three or four minutes and it gives them momentum and they get the goal and we find it difficult. "We tried to freshen it up a little bit and change our tactics and sometimes it can prove the right decision and other times you can get nothing. "It just so happens as we make the change it is poor play from us on the far side with the throw in and we find ourselves 2-0 down within seconds of making the change."
