Southend United have agreed new one-year deals with Lee Barnard, Paul Smith and Jack Payne.

Striker Barnard originally rejoined the Shrimpers on a six-month loan from Southampton in January and has agreed a permanent deal having netted once in 14 appearances during the second half of last season. Goalkeeper Smith has been retained despite featuring on just one occasion as understudy to Daniel Bentley, while young midfielder Jack Payne played 15 times in his breakthrough campaign and his one-year deal has the option of a further 12 months. Defender Julian Bennett has left the club after making one solitary appearance which ended in a serious knee injury last August.
