Southend keen to offer striker new contract

Southend boss Steve Tilson insists the club are yet to receive an approach for leading scorer Lee Barnard. The 16-goal striker is out of contract at the end of the season and would be able to leave Roots Hall on a free transfer - just like last season's player of the year Peter Clarke did this summer. Tilson is keen to keep Barnard at the League One club and told The Echo: "There have been no approaches for Barney but I wouldn't expect them until January when the transfer window opens again. "We want to offer Barney a new contract because we want to keep him here. "He wants to keep his options open though and that is his prerogative, so we will just have to wait and see what happens. "And if someone comes in with a bid then we would weigh it up."
