Andrew Whing's future at Brighton looks bleak after manager Gus Poyet has allowed him to try and find another club.
The 25-year-old defender has struggled for first-team action since Poyet's arrival at the Withdean and he spent the latter part of last season on loan at Chesterfield.
Poyet has allowed Whing to stay behind in England to find new employers while the rest of the squad embark on a pre-season trip to Portugal, meaning an exit for the former Coventry right-back is looking imminent.
"I explained to him the situation and we agreed it was better for him to stay behind and see what is going to happen," Poyet told
The Argus.
"He knows his situation from a long time ago, so it's nothing new. He is under contract and he is a great professional.
"He trains every day and never complains, so I am not going to push him out and push him into a bad situation which is not fair for a professional like Whingy.
"He knows it is going to be difficult for him to play but you never know what is going to happen.
"Sometimes you don't think you have a chance and then suddenly you are in the team but I cannot promise him anything, he knows that.
"The idea is to give him a chance to find a place where he can play football."
Whing joined from the Sky Blues on a free transfer in the summer of 2007 after a successful loan spell the season before and he has made over 100 appearances.
