The agent of former Birmingham City striker Nikola Zigic has told SPORT that Arsenal have expressed an interest in his client.

Arsene Wenger is known to be in the market for a new frontman after seeing Olivier Giroud pick up an untimely knock.

It is feared that the Frenchman could miss at least three months of the season, with it possible that he will be ruled out until the New Year.

Cover is required, but Wenger has little time in which to operate during the summer transfer window and is reluctant to spend big after already bringing in Alexis Sanchez from Barcelona.

An experienced head with a proven record at the highest level is being sought, and 33-year-old Serbian Zigic would appear to fit the bill.

He is a free agent after leaving Birmingham at the end of his contract and is said to have been offered a short-term deal at Emirates Stadium.

Zigic’s representative Milan Calasan told SPORT: “It is true. Wenger called me on Tuesday afternoon and told me that he wants to bring Zigic to Arsenal.

“It is clear that you cannot reject an offer like that. But Zigic is the one who must decide. He must say what he wants.

“But Wenger was clear, he is offering a contract until the end of the season with the option for another 12 months.

“I know that Arsenal are in a hurry, but Nikola also has offers from Turkey and Switzerland.”
