Former Serbia coach questions defender's decision to stand down

Ousted Serbia coach Vladimir Petrovic claims Nemanja Vidic is letting his country down by announcing his international retirement. The Manchester United defender revealed on Monday that he no longer wishes to be considered for international duty. Vidic steps down after earning 57 caps but, at the age of 29, it is felt that he still has many years of top-level football ahead of him. Petrovic has publicly questioned the timing of the decision, with Serbia looking to rebuild following their failure to qualify for Euro 2012. The former national coach, who was sacked at the end of a disappointing European Championship campaign, feels Vidic should think long and hard about what he is doing before making such a definitive call. Petrovic told Sport: "You want my sincere opinion? I am surprised by his decision.

"I think he should take more time to think about this. "He will play for many years yet and that kind of statement is not something you expect from such a well-established player. "Before he says goodbye, he should look at himself in the mirror. And he should take a really good look. "Soon he will be back in Serbia and he will have to look into the eyes of the fans. "The easiest thing is to let your country down when they need you."
