Highly-rated striker could stick with Montpellier

Olivier Giroud has hinted that qualification for the UEFA Champions League could convince him to stick with Montpellier. The France international is attracting plenty of interest from across Europe and is being strongly tipped to be on his way to pastures new in the summer. A prolific scoring record in Ligue 1 has brought him to the attention of leading clubs in England and Germany. Giroud is, however, reluctant to give too much thought to his future, with it too early to say which path he will choose to take. "I want to play in the Champions League and Montpellier's efforts to qualify will play an important role in any decision regarding my future," he said. "I am really blossoming here but I don't want to think too much about the future. I just want to focus on one thing at once."

Wages

Club chairman Louis Nicollin will be pleased to hear Giroud offering hope in their efforts to retain the 25-year-old's services, but he concedes that it will be difficult to fend off interest in the summer. "Olivier is a high level footballer," he told L'Equipe. "If he wants to play another year with us, that would be good. "But, if he ends the season as the top scorer in France and plays with Les Bleus at Euro 2012, how could we keep him? "He won't stay on his current wages, and they are already high. "If he wants to join a big club and we can make the deal work for us, we would not look to keep him against his will."
