MONACO have made an enquiry for Bayern Munich's unsettled striker Giovane Elber, but admit it will be difficult to land the 31-year-old.

The Principality outfit have been alerted by the Brazilian's likely availability, following Bayern's signing of Deportivo La Coruna hot-shot Roy Makaay.

With the Bundesliga champions long-term admirers of Monaco's Shabani Nonda, they could be willing to do business, in order to curry favour ahead of a future bid for the exciting Congo international.

A loan deal could be set up, although Elber has admitted a preference to joining Hertha Berlin, and Real Betis have also been credited with an interest in his services.

The South American's salary is a major stumbling block, and Monaco would need to off-load Marco Simone before pulling off an audacious swoop.

"It will be difficult, almost impossible," conceded the club's technical consultant Fabrice Poullain.

"We would need several departures.

"One thing is for sure - we would like to sign a forward because we will lose Shabani Nonda and Souleymane Camara during the African Cup of Nations.

"Moreover, Dado Prso is still injured.

"We also have young players, but they have no experience at the highest level."
