Hasselbaink happy with fight

Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink saluted the spirit and determination of his Burton side as his perfect start continued with a 1-0 over Luton.

Full-back Phil Edwards struck with a header early in the second half to give the Dutchman his second win in as many games. Hasselbaink said: "I'm very pleased with the result from a game where we showed a lot of character. "Luton made it very difficult for us because they came here with a game plan. "They kept the ball very well and showed that you can play football in League Two. "It was a very close game - and we only just edged it. "Both sides had a lot of respect for each other and that is probably why there were not many chances, but the pleasing thing is that we kept a clean sheet. "The lads showed great spirit, they kept fighting and they kept their shape, which is really reassuring. "The commitment and organisation is something that makes us really strong. "It's been a good start for me as a manager. I'm very happy, but there is a long way to go in this season." The result took Burton up to second place in the table and above Luton, whose 11-game unbeaten league run stretching back to early September is now over. The visitors' misery was completed when defender Luke Wilkinson was sent off for bringing down Matty Palmer in the fourth minute of added time. Hatters boss John Still said: "I was pleased with the performance as the away side against a team with a new manager coming in. "I thought we played well for the whole 90 minutes and the big disappointment was that we conceded a goal from corner, which we usually don't do. "To be fair to Jonathan Smith, he's put his hand up and admitted he lost the runner. "Other than that they had a good chance when we were throwing things forward, but we did everything we could to try to win the game. "I was really pleased with the way we played, really pleased with the application but disappointed with the result."
