Flitcroft hails Bury showing

David Flitcroft felt Bury were outstanding as they won 3-1 at home to Burton to replace the Brewers at the top of League Two.

After struggling to break Burton down in the first half, Flitcroft replaced Danny Rose with Danny Nardiello at half-time and the substitute broke the deadlock within three minutes of the restart. Ryan Lowe then doubled the hosts' lead after 57 minutes before Nardiello sealed victory nine minutes later, making substitute Jacob Blyth's 88th-minute reply merely a consolation for the visitors. "With Burton parking the bus and dropping so deep, you're going to have a wrestle - it's going to be a game of chess," said Flitcroft. "That's what it was like in the first half. But there was only one team who wanted to win the game. "We tried to probe but it wasn't really a game for Danny Rose because there was no space for him in behind. "In the second half we changed the structure. Danny Nardiello loves working in tight spaces and can make goals for himself. "And in the second half we were outstanding. We could have scored every time we attacked them. I don't believe it was down to individual errors. "I saw a special team produce top-quality football. People talk about us winning but I'm also enjoying the product. "We're top now but we were there to be shot at last season. When I came in people said we were doomed. "For me, that was real pressure. This kind of pressure is a privilege." Burton might have taken the lead early on but Robbie Weir dragged a shot wide before Bury's Pablo Mills headed over after a short corner. Tom Soares then scuffed a good chance and the Brewers replied with Callum McFadzean blazing over. Nicky Adams and Craig Jones fired wide for the hosts before half-time, but Nardiello directed Danny Mayor's shot into the net to claim the opener before Lowe poked home the loose ball after a clearance was charged down. Nardiello then bundled in Bury's third from a stray backpass while Blyth's late header from Stuart Beavon's cross at least meant Burton avoided a second straight 3-0 defeat. Albion boss Gary Rowett said: "You're going to miss some of the players we had unavailable but I'm not going to make any excuses for it. "We came here with a game plan that I felt went well in the first half, we got into some good positions and limited them to relatively few chances. "But then the defensive side of our game wasn't good enough in the second half. They were very poor goals to concede and that was the disappointing thing because as I felt the longer the game went on, the more we would frustrate Bury. "We've taken the plaudits over the last 18 months about the way we've defended and I feel the last two games we've come away from that. I've said to them that I'm not happy with that, we've got to take that on the chin. "When we take the credit we've also got to react to stuff like that and do something about it."
